The UK’s biggest grocery retailer, Tesco, is supporting the societal shift to electric vehicle usage by increasing its free charging points to 2,400 by 2022.

The supermarket chain already has the largest electric charging network in the UK with 1,660 points installed at 400 of its stores through a partnership with Volkswagen and Pod Point. In a statement the company said: “We believe it’s important to offer an easy, clean and free way for customers to top-up their cars while they shop with us.”

To date, Tesco’s network has provided more than 10 million miles of carbon neutral energy to customers. “We’re already using 100% renewable electricity across our stores and distribution centres, and have committed to reach net zero emissions in our UK business by 2035, 15 years earlier than we originally planned,” the retailer added.

Electric vehicle charging is one part of the company’s activity to tackle the two biggest sources of emissions in the UK – electricity production and transport. The grocer has also secured power purchase agreements with investment and asset company Low Carbon and electricity supplier EDF to create new solar farms throughout the UK, which will procure more renewable energy for its business.

Tesco has installed hundreds of solar panels in its UK stores – with more coming – and is planning to make all of its delivery vans serving its online business fully electric by 2028.
