Tannat, the pride of Uruguay: vintages that are well worth a detour
A grape variety originating from the South-West of France, Tannat is today the icon of the Uruguayan vineyard. On the occasion of Tannat Day, celebrated every 14th of April, we take a closer look at some remarkable wines from Uruguay, which are still too little known in Europe.
A French grape variety that has become a national emblem
Although it originated in the terroirs of Madiran, Tannat has found an ideal home thousands of kilometres away: Uruguay. Introduced in the 19th century, it has become the country’s flagship grape variety in just a few decades, cultivated on nearly 1,600 hectares, or about 30% of the national vineyard. The date of 14 April, the anniversary of the birth of Pascual Harriague – a pioneer of its introduction in Uruguay – is now celebrated as ‘Tannat Day’, an opportunity to highlight the diversity and quality of these wines.
This festive day is organised by the INAVI (National Institute of Vine and Wine of Uruguay), which works to promote the national wine heritage. And for good reason: although Tannat is a demanding grape variety, it reveals a singular profile in Uruguay, more supple and accessible than in France, while retaining structure and depth. A unique identity, forged by the country’s temperate climate and proximity to the Atlantic.
Unique vintages to discover
For Tannat Day 2024, Terre de Vins has selected several vintages that demonstrate the richness of this grape variety when grown on Uruguayan soil. Among them, the Gran Tannat 2020 from De Lucca, produced in the Canelones region, offers a fleshy and elegant interpretation of the grape variety, with notes of black fruit and spices. A fine demonstration of the ageing potential of Uruguayan Tannat.
Another favourite is the 2020 T1 Tannat from Marichal, which impresses with its balance and fresh structure. Produced by a fourth-generation family bodega, this wine proves that tradition and oenological precision can go hand in hand. Finally, the Juana La Loca 2022 vintage from Bodega Cerro Chapeu, from the north-west of the country, is a delicious and lively wine, partially aged in casks and amphorae.
