The growing kefir market is the focus of a new study from Fortune Business Insights, who predict the market will reach approximately €1.72 billion ($1.8 billion) by the year 2027.

kefir, for those who are not aware, is described as being a fermented milk drink, comparable to a thin yoghurt. Fortune Business Insights has touted the drink’s positive effect on heart health as being one of the reasons as to why the kefir market will grow over the next decade, predicting the valuation to be approximately €1.72 billion ($1.8 billion) in 2027. This would mean the kefir market increasing at a compound annual growth rate of 5.4% from 2020 to 2027.

The report cites a study conducted by the University of Eastern Finland and one study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, which both indicate that kefir has health benefits for consumers. The University of Eastern Finland found in their report that “men who consume a large number of fermented dairy items such as kefir and yoghurt have a significantly lower risk of developing coronary heart disease,” while the study in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found that drinking kefir-infused fermented milk “improved blood pressure and prevented cardiac hypertrophy.”

The report cites kefir’s health benefits as a key reason why the market will grow in coming years, with Fortune Business Insights mentioning the Covid-19 pandemic as being influential in reigniting conversations regarding gut health and foods to boost the immune system.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the leading cause of death worldwide is cardiovascular disorders. Thus, demand for ingredients featuring antibiotics is predicted to increase, with the kefir market being no different.
