McCain Foods has closed its acquisition of Scelta Products, boosting its operations in the frozen foods sector.

The Canadian multinational frozen food company completed its acquisition of Scelta Products on September 8, 2022. Scelta Products is a company based in the Netherlands that specialises in breaded, frozen vegetable-based snack products.

The acquisition however, is not the start of the company’s work together, as the two companies have been business partners for 13 years. Now, McCain Foods is expanding its operations in the frozen vegetable appetiser segment, by acquiring Scelta Products altogether.

“With common customers and shared values as family-owned companies, there is a natural complement between McCain Foods and Scelta Products,” said Max Koeune, CEO of McCain Foods.

“We feel honoured and privileged to build on the legacy of Scelta Products, bringing their delicious product to our customers as we expand on the fantastic business that Scelta’s founders have created.”

Commenting on the deal from a Scelta Products perspective, co-founders Jos Koster and Wilco Boone said: “Our companies have grown together over the years, and I’m excited to see that continue.

“In joining forces with McCain, a global leader in prepared appetiser products with similar business values to ours, I am confident that the legacy of Scelta Products will continue to be built upon.”

The acquisition follows a series of investments made by McCain to grow its product portfolio. In 2016, the company acquired a majority stake in Van Geloven B.V, a company specialising in snack products. In 2018, the company bought a 49% stake in Brazilian cheese bread market leader Forno de Minas. McCain then bought a minority stake worth around €48 million ($55 million) in Strong Roots, an Irish plant-based frozen food startup, in 2021.
