Sonic Drive-In Expands Reach with Frozen Tots at Walmart
Sonic Drive-In, a fast-food chain renowned for its tasty tots, is making its way to the freezer aisle of over 4,000 Walmart SuperCenters across the United States.
Starting this June 2023, Sonic fans can now enjoy their favorite tots without having to visit one of the chain’s numerous locations, thanks to the introduction of 28-ounce frozen bags priced at $4.98.
Lori Abou Habib, Chief Marketing Officer for Sonic, highlighted the convenience and versatility this expansion offers to customers. She stated, “By expanding into the frozen food aisle, we’re able to offer customers a versatile mealtime option that can be enjoyed as a side dish or as the star of a delicious meal, all with the added convenience of allowing customers to prepare them at home.”
Sonic’s decision to venture into the retail market is not entirely new. The fast-food chain has previously seen success with its products being carried in supermarkets and mass retail stores across the country. From gelatin and flavored drink packets to frozen flavored push-up pops, Sonic has lent its name to a variety of products. This expansion into retail allows the brand to increase its exposure and potentially drive more sales at its physical locations.
The trend of restaurant brands appearing in the retail space is gaining popularity. It presents an opportunity for restaurants to gain broader visibility and reach a wider customer base. Moreover, having well-known restaurant products on supermarket shelves helps food sellers differentiate themselves from other offerings.
Several other major food companies have embraced this strategy. Nestlé, for instance, licenses the California Pizza Kitchen brand, while Kraft Heinz has partnered with Taco Bell, Benihana, and TGI Fridays. In a similar move earlier this year, Conagra Brands announced the introduction of Wendy’s chili in canned form as part of its P.F. Chang’s skillet meals.
While Sonic expands its retail presence through Walmart, the chain has also hinted at additional retailers that will carry its beloved tots in the future.
