San Francisco-based startup MeliBio is taking its bee-free honey to stores across Europe, after striking a deal with distributor Narayan Foods.

MeliBio, which claims to be the world’s first bee-free honey company, recently announced a partnership with food distributor Narayan Foods. The deal means that MeliBio’s vegan honey will be made available in up to 75,000 stores across Europe. The products will be sold under the Better Foodie brand, from Narayan Foods. Products are expected to hit shelves in the first three months of 2023.

The vegan honey from MeliBio was recently recognised at SIAL Paris 2022, featuring in the SIAL Innovation Selection. The plant-based product provides consumers with a sweetener alternative to that made from bees, with what the company calls a “environmentally-conscious and healthy [choice.]”

“Growing up and building my early career in one of the world’s leaders in honey production, Serbia, it is with great excitement that I bring our innovative MeliBio plant-based honey to Europe,” said Darko Mandich, CEO and co-founder of MeliBio.

“We are proud to partner with Narayan Foods, one of Europe’s most respected sustainable food producers, to bring our delicious and sustainable products to Europeans. We are thankful to our investors for recognising the progress our team has made and for providing the additional capital to scale our company.”

The company also announced a recent investment of approximately €2 million ($2.2 million). This came from existing investors Collaborative Fund and Siddhi Capital, along with new investor The Greenbaum Foundation. To date, MeliBio has received around €8.85 million ($9.4 million) in backing.
