In this exclusive interview, Ninna Grannucci, Co-founder and President of Green Spot Technologies, shares her insights ahead of the round table she will participate in at the “Summit RSE” during SIAL 2024. She discusses how Green Spot is committed to reducing environmental impact by using by-products and sustainable technologies, while addressing the challenges of promoting corporate social responsibility in the food industry

What specific initiatives have you put in place at Green Spot Technologies to minimise the environmental impact of your activities?

Green Spot core is to minimise the environmental impact of the food industry, including our own. This rationale was used to select our raw material, we are using by-products (side-streams) from the food transformation industry, our technology, as we are working with solid-state fermentation that has the lowest CO2 footprint when compared with other technologies, and the products we sell, as we are replacing ingredients that have higher CO2 footprints when compared to ours. This is also true for the choice of technology for drying and grinding the product and the fact that we don’t have any extraction or purification process after the fermentation, thus the only waste we produce is clean water during drying.

Can you share examples of partnerships or collaborations that have enabled Green Spot Technologies to advance its CSR objectives?

Green Spot has collaborations with different transformation industries, such as breweries, compote producers and tomato sauce producers. These were partners that allowed Green Spot to go deep into their activities and propose a solution that was aligned with their production system but also with their and our sustainability objectives.

How does Green Spot Technologies educate and engage its stakeholders on the importance of sustainable and responsible practices?

As said, Green Spot was created with sustainability as its core, our business model is aligned with our impact objectives. Therefore, sustainability is the base for our engagement internally and externally. We have communication material, and participation on different projects and events to raise awareness about food waste and the crucial role food plays in health and Wellness.

What are the main CSR challenges you have encountered at Green Spot Technologies, and how do you see your company’s future in this area?

The main challenge within Green Spot is to keep adapting the strategy in a growing organisation.

What do you expect from this round table?

To learn from mature companies what their sustainability strategy is and how this would translate to an organisation like Green Spot.
